Rumsfeld’s ‘known knowns’ today

“There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”

Donald Rumsfeld, the USA Secretary of Defense, made this statement on February 12, 2002, when he was commenting on the absence of evidence of linkage between the Government of Iraq and the supplies of weapons of mass destruction to terrorists.

But, following now the three largest military intervention at the moment – in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, i think, this is still a very valid description of the present situation and to what extent we actually understand what REALLY is going on.
